Son of Alfred Lennon , a World War II Marine deserter, and who was absent for much of his childhood. His mother, Julia, who in Alfred’s absence got married to another man.

Lennon at the age of 5 had to decide who he was leaving with, as the father returned to claim custody of his son. Jhon despite the fact that he had chosen her father, he did not stop crying for her mother, so they decided that he would stay with her.

However, he was placed in the care of childless aunt and uncle George and Mimi, who raised him. His home then was located at 251 Menlove Avenue, on a property called Mendips . Despite his stay with his uncles, his mother did not stop visiting him daily.

In this neighborhood he met his first companions in the musical adventure : Pete Shotton , Ivan Vaughan and Nigel Walley , with whom he later formed a skiffle and rock and roll music group.

He studied at Dovedale Primary School and Quarry Bank High School , the latter dropping out in 1957, as he was not interested in his academic obligations but rather in music and the art of drawing comics.

He also studied at the Liverpool College of Art, from where he was expelled due to his behavior outside the institutional norm. Already at that time, John was a supporter of countercultural thinking, even in the dressing room.

THE QUARRYMEN, THE ROAD TO BEATLES

During his stay at Quarry Bank High School, he founded the Quarrymen group music group in 1957, a skiffle , a style originating from poor black Americans, new for London society at the time.

In 1957, at a concert given by the Quarrymen in the garden of St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, Lennon meets Paul McCartney . By this time Lennon was already 18 years old and it was when he wrote his first song: Hello Little Girl , top 10 in all of England.

McCartney brought George Harrison into the group to act as guitarist, and Stuart Sutcliffe was later added on bass. Little by little the rest of the group deserted and these three became Beatles. In August 1960 they exceeded 48 presentations in the city of Hamburg.

LENNON & YOKO

John Lennon met Yoko Ono, his second wife, in November 1966, during a conceptual art exhibition at the Indian Gallery in London. They got married in 1969 in Gibraltar. John and Yoko then became a media couple promoting peace events.

In 1975, when his battle against President Nixon’s administration bent on expelling him from the United States as an ‘undesirable alien’ ends happily and Sean Ono Lennon, the only child of the couple, is born, John will completely disappear from circulation and dedicate himself to family life.

For five years, his appearances in public were rare and extraordinary. It seemed that not a single note or word more would come out of the hitherto restless spirit of him. But in 1980 the famous cloistered beatle came out of his silence to record with Yoko the album titled Double Fantasy. In it he proclaimed his eternal love for his wife and his son with the usual simple and catchy refrains.

In the autumn of that year, when explaining the reasons for his return to studies, Lennon assured: ‘There are people who are irritated with me because I don’t make music. If I had died in 1975, they would just talk about how great I was and things like that. What makes them angry is that I went on living and decided that the most important thing was to do exactly what I wanted.

In these five years of silence I have learned to get rid of my intellect, of the image of myself that I have. The songs I make come naturally, spontaneously, without consciously thinking about them. In a way, it’s like going back to the beginning. I have the feeling that I am looking at my first record.’

The Beatles marked a time of political and cultural changes in the world: the assassination of Kennedy, the Vietnam War, the counterculture, the Hippie subculture, among others. Lennon was assassinated by a fan on December 8, 1980.

Days later, on December 8, 1980, the murderous bullets of a disturbed worshiper ended his life and turned him, if he was not already one, into a god of modernity.

The writer Norman Mailer stated: ‘We have lost a genius of the spirit.’

In immediate reaction to his death, Lennon’s followers posthumously brought ‘Imagine’ to number one on the charts. Never before had such a number of human beings cried so much when listening to a song.
