Paul Desmond, (1924-1977), American jazz alto saxophonist and composer and proponent of cool jazz.

Remembering the great Paul Desmond, who was born on this day in 1924. One of the most popular musicians to come out of the cool jazz scene, Desmond is best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and compositions like “Take Five” that became jazz standards.

He also played with many different artists and composers. He first collaborated with Gerry Mulligan, with whom he shared the stage in 1969 and in 1974. One of Desmond’s legendary performances was in collaboration with The Modern Jazz Quartet for a Christmas concert in 1971.

Here, he is performing “Take the ‘A’ Train” with Dave Brubeck on piano, Jack Six on bass and Allan Dawson on drums live at the Newport Jazz Festival in The Netherlands, 1971.
