Ahmad Jamal (July 2, 1930, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States – April 16, 2023, Sheffield, Massachusetts, United States), adopted his Muslim name when, at the age of twenty-one, he converted to Islam. Born Frederick Russell Jones, in a city – Pittsburgh – birthplace of great jazz pianists. From Pittsburgh, they were Erroll Garner, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Strayhorn, Earl Hines and Dodo Marmarosa. Before becoming seriously interested in jazz, he had begun studying classical piano at Westinghouse High School and made his debut in George Hudson’s orchestra in 1947.

At nineteen years old, he was a member of the group “The Four String” and the following year he formed his first jazz trio, which he called “Three String” with Ray Crawford, on guitar, and Eddie Calhoun on double bass. With them, he began his career as a leader and worked in Chicago and New York and immediately signed a contract with the Epic label and began recording in 1951, the year he changed his name. From his first album, two songs were going to launch him to stardom, “Ahmad’s Blues”, to which the magazine “Down Beat” in 1952 gave five stars when the LP was published in 1952 – the maximum score – and “Billy Boy ».

In 1956, Ahmad replaced his guitarist with a drummer, who was originally Walter Perkins and who in 1958 was replaced by the excellent Vernell Fournier. Israel Crosby joins the double bass, a musician who will be decisive in the configuration of what from now on will begin to be known and acclaimed as the “Ahmad Jamal trio”, one of the most original combos in the history of jazz.

Their first album with that format is the one published as “But Not For Me” recorded live at the “Pershing Lounge” in Chicago. In 1959, she traveled to Africa in search of religious faith, and upon his return in 1960 she resumed her activity. He set up a club in Chicago that he called “Alhambra” and on the occasion of its inauguration in June 1961, he would record another historic live album “Ahmad Jamal’s Alhambra.”

For family reasons – his marriage dissolved – he closed the club in 1962 and his two companions in the trio left that same year to join George Shearing’s trio. Ahmad Jamal never recovered from that strong emotional blow – his trio with other musicians would never be the same – and he spent the seventies recording albums less frequently in what was the decline of his stardom. he.

Ahmad Jamal was active practically until the end of his days, passing away in April 2023, at the age of 92.
