Jason Charles Beck (born 20 March 1972), professionally known as Chilly Gonzales or just Gonzales, is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and producer. Currently based in Paris, France, he previously lived for several years in Cologne and Berlin. Gonzales’ career spans numerous genres. He is known for his rap albums, his collaborations with pop musician Feist and rapper Drake, his albums of classical piano compositions (including the Solo Piano trilogy), and for his collaborations with electronic musicians Daft Punk and Boys Noize, the latter of whom he also produces under the moniker Octave Minds.

In 2022, he and Plastikman released a piano rework of the latter’s 1998 minimal techno classic album Consumed in collaboration with Canadian musician Tiga, titled “Consumed in Key”.

Gonzales broadcasts a web series Pop Music Masterclass on WDR, the documentary Classical Connections on BBC Radio 1, The History of Music on Arte, and Music’s Cool with Chilly Gonzales on Apple Music’s Beats1 radio show. He has written several newspaper and magazine opinion pieces in The Guardian, Vice, Billboard, and others. He is the younger brother of film composer Christophe Beck. Gonzales won a Grammy Award for his work on Daft Punk’s 2013 studio album Random Access Memories.

Chilly Gonzales is as well renowned for his intimate approach to the piano through the trilogy of albums ‘Solo Piano’ as for his undeniable talents as a showman. Dressed in a bathrobe, with Charentaise shoes on his feet, he filled philharmonies all over the world; in the space of an evening, he can give a moving piano recital, dissect the workings of a Billie Eilish hit and amaze the audience with his rapological dexterity. He writes and performs songs with internationally renowned artists such as Jarvis Cocker, Feist and Drake, and won a Grammy in 2014 for his collaboration on Daft Punk’s Best Album of the Year.

His book ‘(Non) Guilty Pleasures’, on the question of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ taste in artistic fields, was critically acclaimed when it was published in several languages in 2020. In the process, Gonzo recorded a Christmas album that became an instant classic of the genre, A Very Chilly Christmas. Since his song ‘Smothered Mate’ (from the album ‘Ivory Tower’) was chosen as the soundtrack to victories for the Blues, he has gradually moved closer to France, until returning to settle in Paris . While waiting to take his seat at the French Academy, Gonzo drinks in Camembert and French literature and releases, in 2023, his first album entirely written and composed in the language of Molière: ‘FRENCH KISS’.
