Pink Floyd

British pop rock group, originally made up of Syd Barret (Cambridge, United Kingdom, 1946), Nick Mason (Birmingham, id., 1945), Roger Waters (Cambridge, United Kingdom, 1944) and Richard Wright (London, 1945). The group went through two well-defined stages, the first with Roger Waters and Syd Barret as creative leaders (a role assumed by guitarist David Gilmour when he was expelled for his drug problems), and the second after the departure of Roger Waters.

Main heirs and continuators of a line that was already found in the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) by The Beatles , their psychedelic musical style and the spectacular staging of their concerts gave them their own personality within the world of popular music, to the point of being considered the fathers of a new genre that was called symphonic rock; from Queen , David Bowie or Yes to Guns N’ Roses , Chris Martin and Faith No More , the contemporary and later groups and performers who received their influence would be innumerable.

His worldwide popularity began to develop with the publication, in 1973, of the album Dark Side of the Moon . In 1980 they published what became the group’s most renowned album, The Wall , from which three years later the animated film of the same title, starring Bob Geldof, would be extracted.

In 1983, and coinciding with the departure of Waters, whose excessive prominence had strained coexistence within the group, it dissolved. Four years later, Mason, Wright and Gilmour met again, leading to a lawsuit brought by Waters over ownership of the original name. Once the case was resolved in favor of David Gilmour and company, the group Pink Floyd returned to the world of music with an album that became an immediate success, A momentary lapse of reason (1987).
