Assassins is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and libretto by John Weidman, based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr. Using the premise of a murderous carnival to produce the magazine-style portrait of the men and women who tried (successfully or not) to assassinate the President of the United States. The music varies according to the popular music of the era described.

The musical originally opened Off-Broadway in 1990, and in 2004 opened on Broadway, winning 5 Tony Awards.

Sondheim read a script by Charles Gilbert, later asking Gilbert for permission to use the idea. Gilbert accepted, offering to write the libretto; but Sondheim declined the offer, because he already had John Weiman (who had already written the libretto for Pacific Overtures, and who would collaborate with him again on Road Show).

Assassins opened at Playwrights Horizons off-Broadway on December 18, 1990, for 73 performances under the direction of Jerry Zaks. The cast included Victor Garber, Terrence Mann, Patrick Cassidy, Debra Monk, Greg Germann and Annie Golden.

On October 29, 1992, Assassins opened at the Donmar Warehouse in London, with a cast that included Henry Goodman as Charles Guiteau and Louise Gold as Sara Jane Moore. It was performed in 76 functions, closing on January 9, 1993.

The Roundabout Theater Company Broadway production, directed by Joe Mantello, was originally scheduled for 2001, but was pushed back to April 22, 2004 due to a 9/11-sensitive context. September 2001.

After 101 performances at Studio 54, Assassins closed on July 18, 2004, after 101 performances. It starred Neil Patrick Harris in the roles of The Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald, with Marc Kudisch in an extended role as The Proprietor. Michael Cerveris played John Wilkes Booth, for which he received a Tony Award. During the function, the Zapruder film of the death of John F. Kennedy was projected onto the shirt of Lee Harvey Oswald.
