LP 1973: ‘RED ROSE SPEEDWAY’ (Paul McCartney & Wings)
On April 30, 1973, the fourth album of Paul McCartney's post-Beatle era was released in the United States. Following the relative commercial failure of their first release as Wings, 'Wild Life', Paul augmented the band's line-up to include guitarist Henry McCullough and planned to release a double album with outtakes from their sessions for 'Ram'. Although the album was finally released in single format, two of them were part of the final cut, 'Get on the right thing' and 'Little lamb dragonfly'.
McCartney was still in the dilemma of whether he wanted to be a bass player in a rock band or a star with a backing group. The rest of the songs were recorded at the Olympic studios in London with Glyn Johns as recording engineer and at Abbey Road where the song 'My love' was recorded live with an orchestra, released as a single. It was the one that catapulted the album to No. 1 on the charts, unseating precisely the compilation 'The Beatles 1967/1970' from the first place and becoming the first of a series of five Wings albums that would reach No. 1 in the USA.
