LP 1969: ‘CLOUDS’ (Joni MItchell)
On May 1, 1969, Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell's second album, 'Clouds', was released on Reprise Records. She produced most of the album herself (except for 'Tin Angel', produced by Paul A. Rothchild) and painted the self-portrait that illustrates the cover. Joni played acoustic guitar and keyboards and had Stephen Stills on bass and guitars as her only accompanist. The singer included her own versions of two of her songs that were already hits in the voices of other singers such as 'Chelsea morning' and 'Both sides now', both popularized by Judy Collins. The album peaked at number 31 on the Billboard 200 and was awarded a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 1970.
1972: ‘TAKE IT EASY’ (Eagles)
On May 1, 1972, the debut single of the band Eagles, 'Take it easy', was released. The song had been composed by Jackson Browne for his own album but he did not finish it in time. Glenn Frey, who was his neighbor at the time, offered to finish it and Browne ended up giving it to him. The single peaked at number 12 on the Hot100 and quickly became one of the group's signature tracks: it's on all the Eagles' compilation albums and has been played at all of their concerts.
In the second verse, mention is made of the town of Winslow, in the state of Arizona, in one of whose corners the protagonist of the song observes a blonde driver at the wheel of a Ford pick-up. In 1999 the city of Winslow inaugurated the park 'Standin' on the corner' (the words with which the second verse of the song begins) in which next to a mural by John Pugh with motifs from the story told in 'Take it easy', a bronze statue representing a young man was erected on a corner with a guitar.
Jackson Browne also recorded his own version for his second album and even released it as a single, however, in his case it failed to enter the charts. 'Take it easy' is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 'the songs that shaped rock and roll'.
