TO THE ANNIVERSARY OF A SUPER MASTERPIECE—50!!! Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here

On September 12, 1975, Pink Floyd’s ninth studio album, Wish You Were Here, was released in the United Kingdom. Back in 1974, the musicians played some songs from the future album (including “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”) – however, the press perceived them negatively. (It must be said that journalists generally mercilessly criticized everything recorded by the band after Barrett’s departure; Pink Floyd themselves are partly to blame for this – the musicians avoided communicating with the media and did not want to create their own press service).

It was difficult: to begin with, sound engineer Alan Parsons refused to cooperate (by that time he had his own successful project); the recording was accompanied by annoying technical overlays; in addition, Pink Floyd had to be interrupted due to concerts – as a result, Waters almost lost his voice, and for “Have a Cigar” they had to call an acquaintance of the band, folk singer Roy Harper – fortunately, he was recording next door. (Gilmour refused to sing because of the radical lyrics.)

Backing vocals on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” were performed by vocal duo The Blackberries. “Wish You Were Here” was the second album to be conceived by Roger Waters; the main topics were criticism of showbiz and memories of Syd Barrett, who left seven years ago due to drug addiction. Just in the process of working on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” dedicated to him, Syd will appear in the studio in person – the musicians will not immediately recognize their former colleague in a fat man with a shaved head and eyebrows.

They would not see each other again until Barrett’s death in 2006. The cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson’s studio; he also came up with an impenetrable one-color packaging with a sticker for the record; in the United States it will become blue, in the United Kingdom it will become black.

The burning man in the main photo is a real stuntman; and his position in the American and British editions is different. The record will receive a mixed reaction from critics – but fans will not listen to them, literally sweeping the disc off the shelves. “Wish You Were Here” topped the charts in Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, New Zealand, UK Albums and the US Billboard 200.With a combined international circulation of more than thirteen million copies, the album would go platinum in Germany; double platinum in Austria, Italy and the United Kingdom; triple platinum in Canada; six times in the United States; diamond in France. Rolling Stone magazine included “Wish You Were Here” in its list of the 500 greatest albums in history.

Following the commercial breakthrough of ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, Pink Floyd released a concept album ‘Wish You Were Here’, dedicated to their founder Syd Barrett. The record evolves gradually as the jazzy textures of ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ reveal a melodic motif, and in its leisurely tempo, the album shows that it is warmer than its predecessor. Musically, it’s perhaps even more impressive, showcasing the band’s interaction and David Gilmour’s solo in particular. And although there are few songs in it, long, sinuous soundscapes are invariably mesmerizing.

The history of this leading psychedelic band of all time began in the first half of the 60s, when bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright united under the sign of “Sigma 6”. The band had to change a number of names (“Megadeaths”, “Leonard”s Lodgers”, “The Tea Set”, “The Abdabs”, “The Architectural Abdabs”, “The Screaming Abdabs”, “The Pink Floyd Sound”) before settling on a version of “Pink Floyd”, made up of the names of two bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Councilil.

By that time, there had been some personnel changes in the band, the most important of which was the appearance of a singing guitarist and extraordinary composer Syd Barrett. “Pink Floyd” quickly stepped over the boundaries of the traditional rhythm and blues for that time and began to experiment with sound. Feedback, reverb and other tricks were used, as a result of which unusual music was born for the ear, and to enhance the psychedelic effect at concerts, the band used a light show. Having made a name for themselves in the underground, the band signed a contract with EMI in 1967 and immediately drove their debut single “Arnold Layne” with a story about a transvestite into the British Top 20.

The first swallow of global success was the album “Dark Side Of The Moon”. This true masterpiece of psychedelia propelled Pink Floyd to the very top of the Billboard charts and spent 591 weeks on the overseas charts. It seemed that after “Dark Side” it would be difficult to produce something similarly grandiose, but the band coped with this task and two years later offered listeners no less exciting material called “Wish You Were Bliss”, one of the highlights of which was the dedication to Barrett of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.

Pink Floyd instantly regained their former experimental spirit and began recording Household Objects, an opus that was supposed to be recorded entirely using household utensils. The tour changed the direction of the band”s development, gradually increasing Roger Waters’ hatred of the music business as Pink Floyd became a flowing, stadium-gathering commodity.Recording of the album “Wish You Were” began at Abbey Road Studios in early 1975.

The album’s opening multi-track buzz of the rims of wet fingers (the only element left from Household Objects) in “Shine On Your Crazy Diamond”, arguably Pink Floyd’s greatest single, is complemented by the album’s typical guitar four-note rhythmic-melodic element performed by David Gilmour. The nine parts of this composition serve as a kind of endpaper for the album, framing it on both sides, generally representing a 25-minute eulogy to the band’s departed leader Syd Barrett. Barrett’s unexpected appearance in the studio in June was in harmony with the mood of quiet despair that permeated the entire album; no one recognized him in the fat, bald man who snuck into the studio.

Hipgnosis’ sleeve design reflected the album’s isolation and restraint; It was sold sealed in a black cellophane cover with only a sticker with the name. The album, released in September 1975 and met with an indifferent reception from critics, soared to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. He turned the group into an even more flowable commodity.
