1983 Single ‘BILLIE JEAN’ (Michael Jackson)

On January 2, 1983, the single “Billie Jean” was released, the second single taken from the album “Thriller”, released a few weeks earlier.

Composed by Michael and co-produced with Quincy Jones, the song tells the story of a woman, Billie Jean, who claims that the narrator is the father of her newborn child, which he denies. In his autobiography “Moonwalk”, Jackson indicated that he was inspired by real events that happened to him and his brothers during touring when groupies harassed them.

“Billie Jean” was No. 1 on the Hot100 and has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling single in Michael Jackson”s discography and one of the best-selling in history. It was also No. 1 in the UK, Canada, France, Switzerland and Belgium, and top10 in many other countries.

In 1984, the Pepsi soft drink company financed the Jackson brothers” Victory Tour. They returned the favor by starring in two TV commercials and for this Michael rewrote the song and titled it “Pepsi generation”, which was used as a jingle and released as a single. During the filming of the second spot, the accident occurred, in which Michael suffered burns to his hair and had to undergo reconstructive surgery.
