Single 1978: ‘BAKER STREET’ (Gerry Rafferty)

On February 3, 1978, the single “Baker Street” by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty was released in the United Kingdom. It was his first release after three years of inactivity due to legal disputes with his previous record label that arose after the breakup in 1975 of his band Stealers Wheel. He began writing the song on one of the long train journeys he was forced to make between Glasgow and London to meet with his lawyers. During his stay in the capital, he stayed in Baker Street, in the apartment of a friend with whom he spent his evenings chatting, drinking and playing the guitar. (“Wandering aimlessly down Baker Street, with a dull head and shuffling my feet. Another crazy day that the bottle will make you forget tonight.”).

The famous saxophone riff that opens the song was the work of session musician Raphael Ravenscroft and had enough impact that, in the months that followed, the sale of saxophones and their use in pop arrangements grew significantly. Ravenscroft, who was not present in the final mix, revealed years later that his riff was slightly out of tune.

The single went gold and climbed the charts in the United States (No. 2 on the Hot100 for six weeks), Canada (No. 1 for four weeks), Australia and South Africa (No. 1) and the United Kingdom (No. 3).
